According to reporting from Execution Watch, witnesses are leaving the death house, which means Keith Thurmond is dead.
From Execution Watch:
If his loved ones are typical, they are now rushing to the funeral parlor where his body has been sent so they may touch it while it is still warm. The custom stems from the fact that, once a prisoner enters death row, he is permitted no physical contact with is family. In Thurmond’s case, that was about a decade ago.
Thurmond was pronounced dead at 6:22 p.m. CST, 11 minutes after lethal drugs began flowing. According to the Austin American Statesman, Thurmond proclaimed his innocence in his last words.
“All I want to say is I’m innocent,” Thurmond said from the death chamber gurney. “I didn’t kill my wife.”
He blamed the shooting deaths on another man. “I swear to God I didn’t kill her,” he said.
With that, he told prison officials: “Go ahead and finish it off.” And as the drugs began flowing, he said, “You can taste it.” He wheezed and snored before losing consciousness.
