Texas carried out their 12th execution last night, with the execution of former gang member Frank Garcia. Garcia was convicted of fatally shooting a veteran police officer and his wife in a 2001 domestic dispute.
The execution was supposed to be carried out at 6 p.m., but Garcia’s attorneys filed last minute appeals to try to spare his life, arguing that he was mentally impaired and ineligible for execution. They also argued that his previous attorneys earlier in the appeals process and at his trial were ineffective and failed to address his mental issues. However the U.S. Supreme Court turned down his appeals and Garcia was strapped to the gurney at 6:42 p.m.
Garcia’s last words consisted of a 10-minute-long, rambling rant in which he sang to God, praised Yahweh and according to this article, asked Jesus to torment District Attorney Susan Reed so “she, too, finds the Lord.” He mentioned Reed several other times, including saying “I bless you Susan Reed for those who persecute you.” Other quotes from Garcia’s last words include “For this reason I was born, to give God the glory. If you don’t know Him, you’re going to hell. Thank you Jesus for the miracle you are about to perform.” According to the Washington Post, Garcia continued shouting “Thank you Yahweh” over and over until he lost consciousness. Garcia was pronounced dead at 7:02 p.m.
